What do I need to know about Condo Insurance? Did you just recently purchase a condo? Many people don't realize the value and importance of condo insurance. Check with your homeowners association or your CC&R's to see if you need to get your own individual condo contents insurance policy. Find out what parts of the exterior of the condo or home are covered by your home association's insurance and what items are your responsibility. Then make sure that you have sufficient insurance to cover repairing or replacing the items for which you are responsible. If your association's master insurance policy covers the exterior of your home, but not the contents, you may then need a condominium policy. It is usually the responsibility of the condo owner to have their own condo contents insurance policy. What is the value of your personal belongings? Make a list of all of your personal belongings in your condo. Usually the replacement value of all of your personal belonging can be a lot once you add up everything. It is important to request replacement settlement coverage for your personal belongings. It's important to make sure that you let your insurance agent know if you have any items at home that you use for your business. Some insurance company's have an endorsement that you can add to cover your business personal property at home. How much personal liability coverage do you need? Most condo contents insurance policy's provide a minimum amount of personal liability coverage. You can usually add more coverage depending on your individual and specific insurance needs. How much building property coverage do you need? Do you have upgraded floors or cabinetry? Have you made any improvements or upgrades to your condo unit? Building property coverage is important for homeowner associations that provide minimal individual condo unit coverage. When you rent your condo out to others, it is important to tell your insurance agent so that you can have the correct type of insurance policy. This is sometimes known as a condo rented to others policy. This type of insurance policy may provide you with important coverage when you rent out your condo to others. Some of these extra coverages include loss of rents coverage and vandalism coverage in the event of a covered loss. This type of policy usually covers for your condo and personal belongings in your rented condo, but it will not provide coverage for your renters pesonal belongings or tenants. It is important to make sure that your tenants get a renters insurance policy to cover their own personal belongings.
